Eartha Kitt on Love & Compromise
I have been in a long-term relationshipand every day I define and redefine the meaning of a relationship. Are we supposed to compromise in order to have a successful relationship? Should we be ourselves at all times and just work on accepting each other? What are we doing when we are in a relationship anyway? Is there a way to be yourself, hold your values, stand your ground, embody your sexuality, make new friends, learn about yourself and do what you truly want to do when you're in a relationship?
I like to think so. I know for sure my partner and I work, both on ourselves, and our relationship everyday, hard. I think we find that being together makes us better versions of ourselves and we give eachother the confidence to take on the world. We are both still humans with our own individuality, goals, and accomplishments. We have our own longings and dreams. As if that's not big enough, we are also humans of the opposite sex! Much of our work goes into communication and building. It hasn't been easy but it has been fun. After all, we chose to grow, love and live this life together. Should that ever change we can talk about that too.
Let me tell you that I have dove head first and deep into Eartha's interviews from the 1950's - 2008 and she truly is just that. Exciting, deep, funny, charming and sincere. She was an actress, a singer, a comedian, and an activist, an artist at the very end of it all. SHe had a tough childhood due to knowing and internalizing rejection from her mother and family her whole life dealing with sexual and physical abuse as a child. What I love about Eartha is that she PERSEVERED. She PUSHED and she FOUGHT to participate in this life. Learn more about this true queen on this very candid biography by Marie Claire.
